Clocking in at nearly 200,000 acres, the Homochitto National Forest is a natural playground for outdoor enthusiasts. Hunting, fishing, camping, and hiking are all favorite pastimes in this National Forest. Out of all of the hiking trails in this area, the Richardson Creek Trail is one of our favorites. It's a lengthy trail, but it's perfect for a day hike. Let's check it out:
The Richardson Creek Trail is a 10-mile loop trail near the Clear Springs Recreation Area.
It generally takes a few hours to complete, so bring plenty of supplies. We’d recommend you bring some snacks, water, and bug spray.
Most of the trail is shaded. If you’re planning on hiking this trail in the summer, we’d recommend getting an early start.
Those Mississippi temperatures can be brutal. Start early so you can beat the heat.
The good news is that this trail is fairly hidden, so you could end up having the whole trail to yourself!
The trail has an elevation gain of about 1,100 feet.
Pretty impressive by Mississippi standards! You’ll certainly get a workout in.
The trail is generally well-maintained, but it’s not uncommon to find a fallen tree or some overgrown areas.
Especially after a storm.
The trail is well-marked, but there are other trails in this area.
Be sure to follow the correct blazes and have a trail map downloaded ahead of time.
Depending on the time of year you hike this trail, wildflowers may brighten the path.
The wild azaleas in particular are stunning! Those tend to bloom in early spring.
