When you’re looking for a hike that’s scenic – not strenuous – a visit to Noxubee Wildlife Refuge is in order. An outdoor oasis, it spans thousands of acres. Don’t be intimidated, though. Exploring the grounds is a breeze thanks to several hiking trails. Each trail has something to offer; however, if it’s a short and scenic trek you want, you won’t be disappointed with one loop trail in particular.
The Noxubee Wildlife Refuge in Brooksville, MS is basically a treasure trove for outdoor enthusiasts.
In addition to being home to an array of wildlife, the 48,000-acre refuge boasts several boardwalks and hiking trails.
One of the most scenic treks is the Scattertown Trail, a 1.75-mile loop trail that runs along the ridges of the North Central Hills.
Because of the hilly topography, the trail is one of the best places in the refuge to view fall foliage. It’s also a great place for viewing greenery and flora.
Upland hardwoods, shortleaf pine, and a thick stand of switch cane are just a few of the trees found along the trail.
The scenic sights don’t end with the array of plant life, though.
Incredible – and unique – views line the entire trail. It’s truly like something from another world.
Though the terrain is somewhat hilly, Scattertown Trail is considered fairly easy. However, it should be noted that it’s not wheelchair accessible. There are a couple of things to keep in mind before navigating Scattertown Trail. First, decent footwear – i.e. no flip-flops – is a must. Also, if you visit during deer hunting season, it’s recommended that you wear orange. For more information on Scattertown Trail, call the Noxubee Wildlife Refuge at (662) 323-5548. You can also visit the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service website or the Noxubee Wildlife Refuge Facebook page.
