With over 135,000 acres to explore, it’s safe to say that the Gulf Islands National Seashore is a nature lover’s paradise. Sprawling across the Gulf of Mexico’s barrier islands in Florida and Mississippi, you could spend a lifetime exploring the natural beauty here, but you’ve got to start somewhere! Both Florida and Mississippi’s areas are divided into districts, and Mississippi’s Davis Bayou Area is the only portion accessible by car, making it the perfect starting point. The Davis Bayou Trail in Mississippi is a picturesque nature trail that the entire family will enjoy, so go ahead and bring the youngest nature lovers out for the adventure.
Located in Ocean Springs, the Davis Bayou Area features a campground, visitor center, and even a boat launch for aquatic adventures.
The Visitors Center is a great spot to start, and there are several exhibits here where you can learn all about the thriving ecosystems and wildlife in the area, as well as conservation and restoration efforts.
There's even a picnic area nearby, so be sure to pack some snacks to enjoy either before or after the trail.
The Davis Bayou Trail will take you on a scenic stroll through a coastal forest, meandering over lazy bayous with scenic overlooks along the way.
There are actually a handful of trails in this area, and you can mix and match them to fit your schedule.
All of the trails are under three miles which is the perfect length for short, scenic hikes like this!
Depending on the time of year you visit, you may spot some of the local wildlife, like alligators, turtles, and an endless array of birds.
The warmer months are your best chance to catch these cold-blooded beauties soaking up the sun along the banks. Just remember, don't feed them!
At the southern tip of the trail, you'll come to the pier, which gives you a perfect panoramic view of Davis Bayou.
You might even get lucky and spot some dolphins!
