You can explore Lake Maria, a Minnesota state park, in winter, spring, summer, or fall - it’s open year-round, and gorgeous in any season. In fact, visiting frequently, engaging in a little phenology, and watching the seasons change may be the best way to experience the park.
Lake Maria State Park is one of Minnesota’s last remaining examples of the Big Woods forest that once covered a good portion of the state’s southern half.
This means, with all its deciduous trees and the species that the forest attracts, Lake Maria is an ideal spot for watching the seasons change.
Summer, when the forest is lush and the air is warm, is magical in Lake Maria State Park.
Camp at one of the park’s many hike-in sites, or splurge on one of Lake Maria’s three camper cabins.
Lake Maria is one of the state’s designated wilderness parks, which means that vehicle traffic is limited.
You have to get out on the trails and get up close and personal with the park to experience what it has to offer in each season.
Of course, summer is the best time to get out and paddle or fish on the park’s lakes.
The change from summer to fall in the park is spectacular.
With mild weather and far fewer mosquitoes, fall just may be the best time to visit.
In fact, few folks would argue if we were to say that fall is the most magical time at Lake Maria State Park.
However, there’s plenty to do and see in the park during winter, as well.
Hiking, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing are popular winter pastimes.
And a blanket of snow adds an extra layer of beauty to the forest.
You can camp or rent a cabin in the park during the winter months, as well.
As the mantle of snow melts from the park, the forest starts to come back to life.
Be sure to visit in the spring to see the cycle start all over again.
No matter what season you visit, be sure to stop by the Cornerstone Cafe, in nearby Monticello, for a bowl of its famous wild rice soup while you’re in the area.
