It should come as no surprise that Minnesota is full of excellent swimming spots. In a state nicknamed the Land of 10,000 Lakes, you would expect nothing less. We have swimming holes, riverfront and lakeside beaches, and even the nation's first natural swimming pool. But the fun doesn't stop there. Today, we'd like to introduce one of Minnesota's most unique and unusual swimming spots. It's in Lake Superior in Duluth, and it's sure to delight those who love great views, history, and the lake's cool waters. Read on below to learn more:
The Cribs, better known as Uncle Harvey’s Mausoleum, is a unique attraction in Duluth, Minnesota. It’s a historic structure built in the early 1900s by Harvey Whitney.
Whitney intended for the structure to be a hopper to store sand and gravel in wait of shipment. But the idea never panned out. Now, the old hopper stands 30 feet offshore in Lake Superior. It’s easy to spot from the Duluth Lakewalk.
The ruin is a curious landmark known to most who have lived in or traveled to Duluth. It's an old stone structure that, year in and year out, has weathered storms, snow, and ice.
It’s also a popular place to swim! Crowds gather to climb up on the ruin and jump into the cold water of Lake Superior below!
In between jump, people sit and lie on Uncle Harvey's Mausoleum to take in the beautiful views - and the warmth from the sun.
If you're looking for a unique swimming spot in Minnesota, this place could be the ticket! While it's not a beach - the shore is rocky - it sure makes for a fun, new setting for taking a dip.
Next time you're in Duluth, keep an eye out for Uncle Harvey's Mausoleum. And if you're feeling up to it, swim out to see it up close! Though the water is cold, the old ruin is worth the trip!
