Thanks to Minnesota's vast forests, this state is home to more than a few old fire towers that date back to the early 20th century. These days, there are more efficient ways to spot wildfires. But the fire towers still stand, and they make excellent scenic overlooks for those who dare to climb their heights. One awe-inspiring tower climb in northern Minnesota will give you an unforgettable view of Minnesota's last true wilderness. Take a look:
Big Bog State Recreation area is a unique part of northern Minnesota that everyone should visit. The DNR called it Minnesota's last true wilderness.
The area is right on the edge of Upper Red Lake. Address: 55716 Minnesota Highway 72, Waskish, MN 56685.
Many are aware of the boardwalk that passes through the area. It's 1 mile long, and it takes visitors on a tour of some of Minnesota's most interesting plant and animal life.
The bog's dominant feature is the hardwood forest that will surround you on all sides. But if you look closely, you'll see even more interesting plants and animals.
Big Bog is full of strange plants that you just can't find in other parts of Minnesota. Some are on Minnesota's threatened or endangered species list.
Among the most interesting wildlife? A carnivorous plant called the sundew, orchids, and even some rare birds.
At the end of the boardwalk, you'll be surrounded by the marshy, plant-filled world of the bog. Take a minute to soak in the unique surroundings. There's nothing else like it in Minnesota!
After you've had your fill, it's time to go above the bog. The Big Bog fire tower rises 100 feed into the air.
This climb is not for the faint of heart. The stairs will be challenging for some, and those with a fear of heights will have trouble reaching the top.
But if you can manage, it's the best view around.
You'll be able to see for miles in every direction. The tops of the trees will seem far away, and the Upper Red Lake will stretch before you.
Surrounded by nature, you'll really feel like you're in Minnesota's last true wilderness.
