Minnesota is gorgeous all year. Winter brings snow-covered scenes, spring brings flowers in bloom, and summer is full of sunny lakes. But for many Minnesotans, fall is the prettiest time of year. The changing of the leaves is absolutely spectacular, especially in Minnesota's many forested areas. Among the most beautiful places to see the fall leaves is in the Sawtooth Mountains. If you'd like to see for yourself, try hiking the Oberg Mountain Loop. This trail - part of the larger Superior Hiking Trail - will take you into the hilly Sawtooth Mountains, where you'll see some of Minnesota's most breathtaking views of fall colors from above. Here's what you need to know about the trail:
The Oberg Mountain Loop Trail is a three-mile trek through Minnesota's Sawtooth Mountain Range. It's part of the Superor Hiking Trail.
The trailhead is about 90 miles north of Duluth, not far off the main drag of Highway 61. You can find more information about finding the trailhead on the U.S. Forest Service website.
The hike is beautiful year-round, but it's especially beautiful when the leaves change in fall. The enormous forest surrounding you will be ablaze with red, orange, and yellow leaves. It's absolutely breathtaking.
The trail rises above the surrounding landscape, offering aerial views of the forest below. You'll see thousands of trees stretched in every direction. The blanket of color the trees create is unlike anything else in Minnesota.
Not only will you see trees, but you'll also catch glimpses of some gorgeous Minnesota lakes. Oberg Lake, an almost perfectly round lake rimmed with trees, is a standout sight along the trail.
Truly, the Oberg Mountain Loop is not only one of the best ways to see Minnesota's mountain range, it's also one of the best ways to immerse yourself in Minnesota's most beautiful season.
If you're looking for a relatively easy hike to take this fall, the Oberg Mountain Loop might just be the one for you. This trail isn't long, but it is unpaved and does get steep in areas. Be sure to come prepared and take plenty of breaks!
