The waterfall gets many visitors during these seasons, with numbers dwindling as snow sets in. But winter just might be the most beautiful time to visit Minneopa Falls. Snow and cold turn the waterfall into a sheet of solid ice. Next time you're looking for a winter adventure, consider planning a trip to this breathtaking place. Read on below to learn more about Minneopa in the winter:
Minneopa State Park is a beautiful park in Mankato, Minnesota. It's about 90 miles southwest of Minneapolis. The park is home to many interesting attractions, including a herd of bison.
But the park's most famous feature is definitely its waterfall. The waters of Minneopa Creek flow through the park...
...and tumble over a tall sandstone cliff. The waterfall has two drops. The smaller one is just a few feet tall. But the big drop is a whopping 39 feet.
In the cold of winter, the flowing water often freezes over. It creates a solid sheet of ice hanging from the 39-foot-tall cliff.
There is a large platform where you can see the frozen waterfall from above. There's even a beautiful bridge to view it from.
If conditions allow, you can also hike down to the base of the waterfall. It may be icy, so you'll want to be cautious if you choose this route. No matter how you view it, you'll be impressed with the otherworldly sight of a frozen Minneopa Falls.
