Minnesota is full of hundreds of miles of short hiking trails that take adventurers to beautiful locations. You'll find waterfall hikes, forest trails, and sweeping views from the tops of tall hills. But did you know there's a single hike in Minnesota that includes all of these attractions - and much more? The Superior Hiking Trail covers a vast, scenic part of Minnesota, spanning the entire Arrowhead region, from south of Duluth to the Canadian border. Read on to learn more about this incredible trail and all it has to offer.
The Superior Hiking Trail spans 277 miles across the state of Minnesota. Only foot traffic - no bikes, horses, or motorized vehicles - is allowed on the trail.
The southernmost entry to the trail is in Jay Cooke State Park, about 15 miles south of Duluth on foot. There are also trailheads every 10 or so miles, making it easy to plan day hikes as well as long distance travels.
The trail draws travelers from across the country - and world - due to its impressive views of the Minnesota landscape.
Lake views are common along the trail. And because you can only access it by foot, you're sure to have many quiet moments of reflection.
Trekking through the forest will also present unique views. When the trees are bare, you'll be treated to a rare stillness in the mixed forests of northern Minnesota. And when they're full of foliage, you'll be greeted by a vibrant canopy.
Wildflowers bloom in warm months. These are easily found in the numerous river valleys accessible from the trail.
And don't forget the waterfall views! Because the trail passes along many state parks, you'll have easy access to popular falls like Gooseberry, as well as smaller, lesser known waterfalls.
Of course, it's the Superior Hiking Trail for a reason. The trail's lowest point - 602 feet above sea level - is along the shores of Lake Superior. If you're feeling brave, you can even take a dip in the lake's cold waters to cool off.
The highest point rises 1,000 feet above Lake Superior, 1,829 feet above sea level. You'll have views of rugged rock, mirror lakes, and rolling forest in every direction.
This beautiful trail crosses much of Minnesota, and it's perfect for day hikers and long-distance trekkers alike.
