Every region of Minnesota has a special beauty all its own. In the north, thick woods and clear lakes dominate. In the southwest, the land gives way to prairie. And in the east, tall bluffs rise above the St. Croix and Mississippi Rivers. That is where this amazing hiking trail lies. It'll take you high above the city of Red Wing to show amazing views of the Mighty Mississippi.
Barn Bluff is a famous Red Wing landmark that has a long history.
During European exploration of the area, the 340-foot-tall bluff served as a guidepost for travelers venturing west to map the unexplored continent. In fact, it is those explorers who gave the bluff its current name.
But Barn Bluff's history goes back even further.
Dakota legend states that it is one half of a great mountain that split when there was a dispute over its ownership. The other half is said to be the Sugar Loaf in Winona. A sign detailing the historic origins of this famous bluff are located near the trailhead of the hike.
There are several trails available for hikers to enjoy.
Some, such as the .11-mile Carlson Lime Kiln Trail, are quite easy. But if you want the best view from the top of the bluff, you'll have to brave a more difficult route.
The Prairie Trail is .55 miles and moderately difficult. It runs the length of the summit to offer gorgeous views. You access this trail by climbing the Kiwanis Staircase. This part is quite difficult, so leave yourself time to rest.
But don't worry. If you can't quite make it up the stairs, there's a less difficult connection to the Prairie Trail as well.
No matter how you get to the top, the view is like another world.
High above the city of Red Wing, you'll be able to see for miles in every direction. The view of Mississippi River, busy with boat traffic, is a sight to see. Lake Pepin is also visible in the distance.
High above the noise and traffic of the city, this is a relaxing hike - once you get up the stairs!
