In Minnesota, we're accustomed to winters that bring lots of snow and cold weather. Unfortunately for those residents who look forward to this frigid season, this winter we didn't see quite as much snow as we would've liked. But give us a little and we'll make a lot. This year's conditions didn't stop us from having some outdoor fun!
Tucked up north not far from the shores of Lake Superior is a secluded park that offers unforgettable adventures.
Known for turning into an absolute winter wonderland during this time of year, Lester Park in recent weeks has taken a page out of Frozen's book and gotten quite icy.
But if you thought that icy trails would keep our residents from going outdoors and having fun, you thought very wrong. Turning lemons into lemonade, Andrew Kilness and a few of his friends hit the winding trails of Lester Park this past week. Using the frozen scenery to their advantage, the group of ice skaters created an epic adventure and turned the park into their own personal skating rink. By now, we know that Minnesotans love waterfalls. And what's not to love? These attractions are some of the most beautiful places in the Land of 10,000 Lakes. Every summer, millions flock to the state's most popular waterfalls to take in the sight of water rushing over rocks. But the fun doesn't have to end with the season. Each of Minnesota's waterfalls is just as beautiful in the winter when they become frozen works of art. If you want to take an adventure this winter, head way up to Grand Portage and Pigeon River High Falls in MN. Take a walk through the snowy woods, and you'll quickly come upon Minnesota's largest frozen waterfall.

Grand Portage State Park is a beautiful - and historical - park on Minnesota's northeastern tip. It is home to the state's tallest waterfall, the High Falls of the Pigeon River.
As you saw in the previous photo, the park is absolutely beautiful in the summer. But a blanket of snow brings a unique beauty that you don't want to miss: setting out on the one-mile-long High Falls Trail for a gorgeous winter adventure. You won't find much cell phone service here, so you'll want to download the map from AllTrails Plus before you go so you can track your hike.
The trail is made up of wooden boardwalks that cut through the dense northern forest. When it's covered in snow, a peaceful silence falls over the park. You will love it.
As you get closer to the falls, you'll find a set of three viewing platforms, including one that is wheelchair accessible. If you can, we recommend taking in the view from each platform.
Once you've found your spot, it is time to enjoy the view! The viewing platforms offer an incredible look at the High Falls of the Pigeon River. In winter, the usually-roaring waterfall is reduced more to a quiet rushing, allowing you to hear the sounds of birds and the wind in the trees around you.
But don't let the silence drive you away. This frozen waterfall deserves to be appreciated! The Pigeon River, as it falls over the jagged cliff, creates a 120-foot-tall cascade of ice and water, sculpting formations that appear otherworldly.
Not only is the frozen waterfall beautiful, but it also sets the stage for another amazing sight: the moment when the ice breaks up, and the frozen river begins to flow unfettered once again, and the falls return to their springtime roar.
