The Butterfly and Hummingbird Garden, in Minneapolis Park Board's Lyndale Park, is a Minnesota pollinator garden that's designed to attract and provide sanctuary for butterflies, bumblebees, hummingbirds, moths, and other important pollinator species. There are often so many butterflies in the park during warm weather months that one may actually land on you!
Lyndale Park is located in southwest Minneapolis, near Lake Harriet.
Its home to several gardens, including its renowned Peace Garden and Rose Garden.
But tucked up against the park's treeline, near the Peace Garden, you'll find another, smaller area.
The Lyndale Park Butterfly and Hummingbird Garden is a place where pollinators, like butterflies, can find what they need to thrive and reproduce while they're in Minnesota during warm weather.
The garden is planted with native species that pollinators have historically relied upon in Minnesota.
These are the flowers that they pollinate or, in the case of milkweed, are plants that play host to their eggs, larvae, or caterpillars.
This is one of the largest pollinator gardens in the state, and in the summer, it's often teeming with butterflies.
Don't be surprised if a curious insect takes a moment to explore your hand!
This is also an awesome spot for seeing hummingbirds at work.
As fun as it is to see them at your backyard feeder, there's something even more special about watching hummingbirds interact with each other and their natural surroundings.
The Lyndale Park Butterfly and Hummingbird Garden also offers sanctuary for Minnesota's 24 native bumble bee species.
Including places where they can nest safely during the winter.
Apart from walking the gardens and enjoying the pollinators and flowers, you can also hike the park's trails.
The Butterfly and Hummingbird Garden is adjacent to the magnificent Roberts Bird Sanctuary, which is a fabulous forest retreat in the middle of the city and makes for a nice little nature walk.
Be sure to visit this incredible park before the butterflies migrate away from Minnesota for the winter. You can learn more about Lyndale Park Butterfly and Hummingbird Garden on its website.
