For decades, Michigan’s Great Lakes have been the focus of family vacations and historical tales. But there’s one lesser-known body of water in our state that maintains a special charm: it’s been the muse for famous writers, the inspiration for delicious brews, and the backdrop for generations of outdoor adventures for visitors from across the country.
Just south of Grand Marais in the Upper Peninsula sits the Two Hearted River, which boasts a long history and a stunning atmosphere. It is split into multiple branches throughout Luce County and generally flows in a northeast pattern.
The river runs for nearly 24 miles through forested areas before ultimately draining into Lake Superior. The mouth of the river meets the lake in a stunning display of natural beauty, with cool water flowing into Superior 10 miles east of Deer Park.
The mouth of the river was once home to the Two-Hearted Life-Saving Station, established in 1876 as a lookout location for surf-men who carried out rescues of ships in distress on Lake Superior. After being integrated into the Coast Guard, the station was closed and demolished, but its historical relevance remains.
The Two Hearted River is also an ideal spot for fishing and has attracted sportsmen from across the country for decades. Several lodges are located along the river, which makes it an easy and calm location for a weekend trout-catching getaway.
Campers will be delighted by the presence of a campground near the mouth of the river, which houses 39 campsites and features basic bathroom facilities. Enjoy an afternoon on the water and retire to your tent as the river flows calmly past your site.
Ernest Hemingway in Cuba. Ida Woodward Barron Collection.
Ernest Hemingway’s short story "Big Two-Hearted River" was named for this Michigan gem, although it’s been said that the story is actually centered around a different river in the Upper Peninsula. However, Hemingway was charmed by the name "Two-Hearted" and chose it for the title of his piece.
Perhaps you’ve enjoyed a sip of Two Hearted Ale from Bell’s Brewery in Kalamazoo — this beer is a nod to the stunning body of water. The bottle even features an artistic rendering of trout that might appear in the river.
The next time you’re looking for a calm wilderness getaway, a family-friendly fishing trip, or a simple visit to one of Michigan’s loveliest outdoor destinations, look no further than the Two Hearted River and its unique combination of natural beauty and fascinating history.
