The town of Grand Marais, Michigan has a population of fewer than 250 residents. Yet this understated destination is close to one of the state's most fascinating natural wonders: the Grand Sable Dunes. If you've ever wondered, "does Michigan have any sand dunes?" then you'll be delighted to discover this unexpected gem. Here's more on why you'll want to plan your visit to this tiny Michigan town and its nearby treasure. (Pro tip: you'll want to bring your camera with you!)
Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is undoubtedly the crown jewel of Michigan's natural wonders. And it's home to a remarkable feature that tends to fly a bit under the radar: the Grand Sable Dunes.
Unlike other sand dunes, the Grand Sable Dunes feature a top layer of sand covering large piles of rock and debris, remnants of ancient glaciers.
This otherworldly region stands 300 feet above Lake Superior and is thus the tallest point along the lakeshore.
The sand dunes are "perched" on top of the banks and are consequently one of the best examples of perched sand dunes in the world.
For those interested in exploring the region, the Dunes Trail offers the perfect immersive experience.
The Dunes Trail is conveniently located near Grand Marais at Sable Falls.
Perhaps one of the most unique features of these dunes is that plants and even entire forests have grown on top of them, which speaks to just how ancient these dunes are.
