Searching for a fun way to experience one of Michigan’s most marvelous natural features without embarking on an all-day journey? There are so many opportunities to explore nature here in the Great Lakes State, but waterfalls might just reign as the most majestic sights in our region. While you’ve likely checked out famous spots like Tahquamenon Falls, there’s one out-and-back waterfall trail in Michigan where visitors can catch pretty views of an underrated nature wonder. Lace up your shoes and head out to have a blast.

Rainbow Falls Trail is located within Ottawa National Forest just northeast of the town of Ironwood. You’ll find a parking area on FR 118, which can be accessed off CR 513.

If you’re looking for a short but scenic stroll that leads to awesome views, you truly can’t go wrong with this delightful path. Visitors will enjoy forested wonders, views of the Black River, and – of course – a waterfall.

Once you leave the parking lot, you’ll head out onto a half-mile path that meanders toward Rainbow Falls. While the path is decidedly short, it ranks at moderate difficulty due to a stairway that leads to the observation deck.

As you approach the falls, you’ll want to bring out your camera to snap a few photos. Rainbow Falls earned its name for the rainbow-like effect that happens when sunlight streams through the mist coming off of the falls.

The falls here measure in at 40 feet tall, making for a lovely scene. While guests can technically check out Rainbow Falls Trail all year long, it’s best accessed between the months of May and October.

For another view of the falls, hikers can venture to the river’s east side. To do this, make a trip across the footbridge at the nearby Black River Harbor Picnic Area and stroll for .75 miles on the North Country Trail.

While the east side hike provides a more direct view, the scenery off Rainbow Falls Trail is beautiful in its own way. Even if you’ve visited before, you’ll appreciate the whimsical atmosphere that abounds here.

When you’re in the mood to explore without dedicating an entire day to hiking, Rainbow Falls Trail is a perfect fit. This peaceful and often-overlooked locale undoubtedly belongs on your Upper Peninsula bucket list.
