Known as Michigan's largest natural freshwater spring, Kitch-iti-kipi just outside of Manistique is known by a few other names, including The Big Spring and "Mirror of Heaven" (named by native peoples.) Once you take a look at its natural beauty, you will see why it's received such a moniker. As the most beautiful natural spring in Michigan and best hot springs in the US, this site is a delight for visitors and locals alike. You'll find the pristine emerald pool when you visit the UP at Palms Book State Park, after a brief walk on a 50-yard path through a wooded area. Here, take a look.
At 200 feet across and 40 feet deep, this place gets more than 10,000 gallons of water gushing into it from fissures in underlying limestone.
This constant flow, plus a continual temperatures of 45 degrees at all times mean this body of water never freezes, no matter how cold it gets during brutal Michigan winters.
There's a constant movement in this lake, as the Big Spring fueling it won't allow the water to settle.
This makes the spring a popular tourist destination, no mater the time of year.
Guests are able to float right on top of it, thanks to observation rafts on hand for people's use.
In every season, seeing the clouds cast shapes upon its picturesque waters is a treat. You'll love the opportunity to peek over the boat to see beyond the reflection... and you just might see a bit of movement below the surface.
The thing that makes this place so magical are the intense crystal blues and greens produced by the algae.... Truly a remarkable sight.
Structurally, this site is a bit like a sinkhole... but underground water sources have made it into a little oasis.
The landscape of this site is fascinating. Underground water created a cave at this spot, and once the limestone ceiling dissolved, it became a lake.
As part of Palms Book State Park, this pretty place abounds with nature... both above and below the water.
You'll find that life abounds here. Critters like trout and perch dwell in these vibrant waters, and the landscape around it is forested and rich.
Prepare to fall in love with this slice of paradise.
It shouldn't come as any surprise that Kitch-iti-kipi is one of the most popular places to visit in the UP, perhaps in the entirety of the state.
