If you’ve spent any significant amount of time in Michigan during winter, you know that our beloved home state is undeniably charming. From the natural splendor of the season to the good cheer that seems to permeate every inch of every home, there are so many elements of a Michigan winter that add to its whimsy. Here are nine reasons why winter in Michigan is pure magic.
1. Two words: lake effect.
We know, we know: lake effect snow can be a major hassle, and we certainly don’t enjoy driving to work through piles of heavy slush. But when we’re bundled up inside, it’s tough to deny the gorgeousness of a Michigan landscape that’s completely blanketed in sparkling white crystals. Talk about magic!
2. A frozen beach is breathtaking.
If you’ve never been to the beach in wintertime, you’re missing out on a fantastic experience. Michigan’s Great Lakes are stunning throughout the year, but there’s nothing more exciting than marveling at icy piers and lighthouses as you stroll (very carefully!) along the crunchy shoreline. Just don’t get too close to those subzero waters during your expedition!
3. We’ve got plenty of stunning skating rinks.
Sure, other states have their fair share of ice skating spots, but it’s hard to beat the atmosphere at Detroit’s Campus Martius Park or Grand Rapids’ Rosa Parks Circle — not to mention the numerous small town rinks and frozen ponds throughout Michigan. After all, our state’s climate is perfectly designed for such wintertime fun, and a night on the rink is nothing short of spectacular.
4. Sledding brings out the kid in all of us.
We hate to brag, but we’ve got some of the most epic sledding, tubing, and tobogganing hills imaginable. Whether you’re flying down the icy hillside at Echo Valley or falling headfirst into the snow at your local sledding area, you’re sure to feel like a child again as you bask in the beauty of the great outdoors.
5. Holiday cheer only enhances that Michigan niceness.
Michiganders (and Midwesterners in general, for that matter) are known for their unfailing niceness. Whether we’re smiling and waving at perfect strangers, helping neighbors dig out their driveways, or simply chatting with loved ones, we’re always quick to bring the friendliness. Add a healthy dose of holiday cheer, and you’ve got the perfect recipe for over-the-top kindness!
6. Snow days, though rare, are like mini miracles.
While our days off from work or school due to inclement weather are few and far between, they do exist. When they arise, we can’t help but feel as though we’re experiencing small miracles. After all, Michiganders are well accustomed to braving the cold and snow, so it takes a lot for us to forego our wintertime plans.
7. Wintertime means plenty of togetherness with loved ones.
No matter what your age, it’s hard to deny that spending time with family members and close friends can certainly be a magical experience. From swapping stories to looking through old photographs in front of a toasty fire, there are some snowed-in moments that are simply unforgettable. After all, the people we love most always make us happiest, and we’re grateful for extra time indoors to spend with them.
8. Christmas lights lead to winter wonderlands.
Even when Christmas is long gone, Michigan remains a haven for holiday light displays. From large-scale setups in public spaces to gorgeous decor on private homes, the presence of such stunning lights remains intact throughout the Christmas season. When you’re ready for a truly magical outing, hop in the car and venture out to see a few holiday lights!
9. Michigan is home, and home is pure magic.
At the end of the day, the real magic of wintertime in Michigan comes from spending time in places that mean so much to us. Whether we’re curled up with a good book in our parents’ home or cuddling with our own children as snow falls peacefully outside, the unique joy of the season will always delight us.
