Michiganders can experience one of the most impressive Great Lake State state parks in a whole new way this winter. Grab your cross-country skis and hiking boots to enjoy a snowy lantern-lit trail hike in Ontonagon, Michigan. This exciting adventure is bucket list worthy and will create lasting memories this season.
The Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park is located in the northwestern corner of the Upper Peninsula. The Porcupine Mountains, otherwise known as “Porkies,” rise up near the shores of Lake Superior and are a small group of mountains in Michigan.
A popular destination for hikers, bikers, and campers in the warmer months, you’ll find plenty of nature lovers on the trails. But when Mother Nature dumps her famous Upper Peninsula snow, that’s when the real fun begins.
Every Saturday in February you can experience a one-of-a-kind lantern-lit trail hike. We start our adventure by meeting at the White Trail parking lot, across from the Porcupine Mountains Ski Area.
You can bring your own cross-country skis or just your snow boots if the trail is packed down. Snowshoes are available on a first come first serve basis.
The trail is a mile-long loop that takes place at night with 70 kerosene lanterns lighting your path.
This would make for a delightful family outing, a perfect solo trip, or a romantic Valentine’s Day stroll with your sweetheart.
The lantern-lit trail is a completely free event but a recreation passport is required for vehicle parking. Now get outside and enjoy some lovely (and chilly) Michigan weather!
