Winter in Michigan gives way to all sorts of breathtaking natural phenomena, from frozen waves upon the Great Lakes to snow-covered forests. But there is one breathtaking wintertime attraction that might have managed to slip under your radar over the years. The ice caves in Michigan are one of the most beautiful seasonal phenomena in the state, and you’ll certainly want to experience them for yourself. Prepare for an absolutely mesmerizing outdoor experience at Michigan's frozen caves.
The Eben Ice Caves can be found off Frey Road in the Upper Peninsula (UP) community of Eben Junction.
Situated within Rock River Canyon Wilderness in the Hiawatha National Forest, these caves are truly breathtaking. Prepare to explore a real-life winter wonderland, right here in Michigan.
As their name suggests, the Eben Ice Caves consist of countless frozen icicles and other formations that appear when temperatures drop each year, typically starting in December.
Lace up your ice cleats (which are highly recommended) and head out from the trailhead to access the caves, which sit approximately .75 miles from the parking area.
Upon approaching the ice caves themselves, you’re sure to be utterly enchanted. From the right angle, the otherworldly formations take on a lovely blue hue.
Snap a few photos as you venture inside the caves -- this is where those ice cleats will come in handy! If you’re not wearing cleats, be sure to tread carefully.
There’s something truly magical about weaving in and out of these gorgeous, massive icicles. In fact, you might just feel as if you’ve stepped into a winter fairytale, a la Disney's Frozen.
As you venture back toward the car, be sure to watch for sections of steep terrain. While the Eden Ice Caves might require a bit of effort to visit, they’re absolutely worth the trek.
Michigan is truly a magical place to live, and the ice caves certainly make up for our seemingly never-ending winters. So embrace the cold, and set out on an epic journey to these frozen caves in Michigan!
