There’s nothing more fascinating than observing wildlife in its natural state. Here in the Great Lakes State, we’re lucky to have access to all sorts of unique animals, from freshwater fish to scheming squirrels to marvelous moose. There’s one destination that takes natural exploration to the next level - and Michiganders of all ages are sure to be utterly delighted.
The town of Gaylord, situated in Otsego County, is adjacent to the second largest herd of free-ranging elk in the Midwest. Nature lovers are sure to fall in love with this spot.
The broader Pigeon River Country State Forest features over 100,000 acres of land on which to view wild elk, but Gaylord’s City Elk Park is perfect for first-time viewers.
In total, the park’s viewing areas offer access to approximately 70 majestic elk. These amazing creatures are sure to impress with their size - some stand roughly six feet tall!
The park-contained herd began with just 14 and has grown throughout the years. Today, city staff keep the animals healthy by providing corn, hay, and sugar beets.
Admission to the park is free and most viewing can be done from the comfort and safety of your car. You’ll want to bring along your camera to snap a few photos.
If you’re feeling more adventurous, head out in search of the free-ranging elk who roam outside the park. One popular stopping point sits along Gaylord’s Fontinalis Road.
In the fall, listen for bugling sounds from male elk seeking to establish dominance. During autumn and winter, you’ll also notice the creatures’ impressive antlers.

Why We Love It: It's taken several trips for me to figure out my perfect "weekender bag that's TSA approved," but I've found my perfect carry on with the TOBIQ Colorado 30L. The Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge is accessible via the town of Trenton, Michigan, which sits approximately 30 minutes by car from Detroit. This sprawling space is truly one-of-a-kind.
The refuge is certainly notable for its natural splendor, but it also stands out for one fascinating fact: it’s the only internationally managed wildlife refuge in North America, as management is shared with Canada.
There are upwards of 6,200 acres of land within the refuge, though this space is divided into a series of “units,” each with its own charms and highlights. Outdoorsy types will be in paradise when they visit.
Established in 2001 by both American and Canadian political leaders, the refuge seeks to bolster relations between the two countries while furthering conservation efforts along the Detroit River and Lake Erie.
