When you’re in the mood to stretch your legs, escape the stresses of everyday life, and take a quick virtual trip back in time, we’ve got just the spot for you. Lace up your hiking boots and head out to this one-of-a-kind trail system in West Michigan.
Kent Trails is a system of hiking pathways that stretches for a total of 22.2 miles throughout Kent County, offering access to Byron Center, Grand Rapids, and more.
While the system extends through a variety of natural wonders and manmade areas, there’s one portion that allows access to a historic bridge. It's time for an adventure.
Meet the trail at Hopewell Indian Mounds Park, which is situated between Indian Mounds Dr SW and I-196, just a stone’s throw from the banks of the Grand River.
As you make your way through the area, you’ll enjoy forested splendor and plenty of charm. It’s hard to believe that this trail sits so close to downtown Grand Rapids.
Upon approaching the Grand River, Kent Trails will take you directly to a fascinating truss bridge. This impressive structure, built in 1894, spans 138 feet across the water.
The former railroad bridge provides a unique sense of history to the area and only adds the charm of Kent Trails. Be sure to stop and admire the flowing river during your stroll.
Upon crossing the truss bridge, you’ll find yourself in Millennium Park. Here, you’ll have the opportunity to continue along Kent Trails or explore the Millennium system.
Take a moment to bask in the fresh air. Whether you’re a bridge enthusiast or a hiker seeking new scenery, a stroll along this historic portion of Kent Trails is sure to delight.
