Adding another one to the list, did you know that Massachusetts is home to the oldest cultivated fruit tree in America? It's true! You can find it in Danvers, Massachusetts.
There's a natural wonder that's unlike any you know about in the Bay State. Located in the town of Danvers, you'll find the oldest cultivated fruit tree in America.
While it's not the oldest tree in Massachusetts, it's still quite a fascinating natural attraction.
During the tenure of Massachusetts' first governor, John Endicott, an English Puritan, a pear tree was planted in Danvers. No one knows the exact date when it was planted, but it was sometime between 1632 and 1640.
(Pictured here is a historical marker in MA about The Endicott Pear Tree.)
The fruit tree was planted outside of Endicott's house, and when it started to bear fruit, those who tried the pears were pleasantly surprised by their flavor.
For over 400 years now, the fruit has been growing on this tree, which has become known as the Endicott Pear Tree. It was discovered, however, that the pears from this tree are actually a variety known as Bon Chrétien, which offers a sweet flavor.
The Endicott Pear Tree is an ancient tree that has survived a variety of threats over the centuries including earthquakes, development, vandalism, and more. Due to its age and survival, it's quite an incredible natural wonder in the state of Massachusetts.
