Beachcombing is an activity enjoyed by children and adults alike. Whether you prefer seashells or sea glass, there are plenty of sandy beaches around the state to find some of nature's best treasures. There's one very unique sea glass beach in Massachusetts that's quite off the beaten path but is worth the effort to get there. And it's one of the best places to find sea glass in the state. Welcome to Spectacle Island!
Spectacle Island is one of 34 islands found within the Boston Harbor Islands National and State Park. This 114-acre island is reachable by ferry and offers a serene escape from the city.
The long history of Spectacle Island shares its many purposes over the years. At one time, it served as farmland, a resort community with hotels, and even a place where trash was incinerated.
Today, the island serves as a public park complete with a marina, a visitors center, a beach, and hiking trails. It's a wonderful place to escape the chaos of urban life for a day.
One of the best things Spectacle Island is known for is its beach glass. Beachcombers will love finding all sorts of colorful beach glass along the sand. However, it is forbidden to remove any sea glass from the island.
However, searching for sea glass is still an incredibly fun activity for the whole family to enjoy. So, come to Spectacle Island and create some memories while combing the beach for smooth, colorful shards of sea glass!
