The Shining Sea Bikeway is a beautiful rail trail on Cape Cod. The trail extends from Woods Hole to North Falmouth.
Despite the name, this trail is accessible to both cyclists and pedestrians. You may even see a few cross-country skiers sliding down the path in the winter months!
This trail will take you along glittering beaches and stunning salt marshes. You’ll also pass a cranberry bog and horse trails at the northern end.
There are plenty of spots to pull over and admire the view. Don’t forget to pack plenty of drinks and snacks to enjoy along the way. And slather on that sunscreen!
The trail is just under 11 miles long one way. If you intend to cycle the entire route, you’ll want to plan ahead and make sure you have enough energy for the return trip or arrange to be picked up on the other side.
Hop on the bikeway at either the southern trailhead at the Steamship Authority ferry terminal in Woods Hole or the northern trailhead at the North Falmouth Railroad Station.
This bikeway is free to use. Please be respectful of other users and watch out for pedestrians if you’re cycling.
The Shining Sea Bikeway is a great way to take in the unique beauty of Cape Cod in all seasons. Have you ever cycled or walked the entire route? What’s your favorite rail trail in Massachusetts? Share your thoughts and experiences with us!
