Summer’s coming to a close but there’s still time to squeeze in a few precious beach days – or even just hours. Next time you want to scrunch your toes in the sand without committing to a long drive, consider visiting Nahant Beach Reservation.
This protected 67-acre reservation is a mere 13 miles north of Boston. The main beach here, Long Beach, ticks the three "C"s of Boston beach access: it’s close to the city, offers clean sand, and has clear water.
However, it remains somewhat overlooked. People tend to either stop as soon as they reach Revere Beach or keep driving until Cape Ann or points beyond.

Nahant Beach Reservation is also hidden in terms of geography because it’s part of a peninsula - you can cruise right by without ever realizing it’s there.
Or just wade. The beach has a gentle gradient, making it great for kids or anyone who likes to submerge slowly. You’ll be able to peer down at your toes through the pristine water.
The views are lovely. You’ll forget how close the city is as you watch the waves come rolling in along this 7,000-foot long beach.
It’s a good idea to bring a picnic since there aren’t many restaurants around here… just a lengthy stretch of beach. But you wanted a mini-escape, right?

Life is so fast-paced that we sometimes forget to slow down, take a deep breath, and enjoy the quiet moments. Connecticut makes it easy to escape reality for a little bit with its many hiking trails, more than 2,000, dotted throughout the state. But some are quieter than others, giving us the chance to feel like we’re miles away from it all. Here are five quiet trails in Connecticut that are worth adding to your bucket list.
Immerse yourself in nature with a hike along Swan Hill, a 1.9-mile trail in Higganum. Since it only takes about an hour to hike, the easy trail is perfect if you’re short on time but are craving an outdoor adventure. Pick up the trail behind the former elementary school in Haddam. The tree-lined path provides ample shade for those hot, sunny days, and the wildflowers add a splash of color during the warmer months while bold shades paint the landscape in the autumn. Cross over a charming footbridge and past a flowing stream as you head to the highlight of this easy path. Expect a bit of a climb that will take you to an overlook and sensational views of the surrounding landscapes. Sturdy shoes are a must as the trail is overgrown in spots.
Carve out a little over an hour to follow the Red, Blue & Green Trail at Brooksvale Recreation Park. Popular with hikers all year round and those who enjoy snowshoeing during the winter, this 3.1-mile path is arguably one of the quietest trails in Connecticut. While the trail is rated easy, you might find the initial incline to be a bit of a challenge but after that, the path is predominately flat. Stroll through a quiet wooded area, past mushrooms sprouting from the ground, and alongside a field. The kid-friendly trail has some rocky terrain, so keep that in mind when choosing shoes.
You’ll need plenty of stamina when you set off on the 7.6-mile Iron Trail, a peaceful path that’s considered moderately challenging. Slip on a pair of sturdy shoes to take on the rocky but flat terrain at the beginning of the trail that leads to a fairly steep climb. Because it’s one of the most remote trails in Connecticut, you likely won’t run into too many, if any, hikers. Keep an eye out for slag glass as you trek through the woods and past a river. You might even spot wildlife, including porcupines and deer.
Wandering 2.8 miles through Racebrook Track, the Racebrook, Pine, and Wepawaug Trail is an easy, kid-friendly trail that welcomes leashed pups. The quiet trail in Orange is popular with hikers all year and those who enjoy snowshoeing in the winter. It usually takes around an hour to complete. The picturesque path is predominately flat, although you might deal with some rocky terrain here and there, and offers plenty of shade from the surrounding trees, a big selling point on hot days. Snap photos of the scenery, including a shimmering brook, and keep an eye out for local wildlife like rabbits and deer.
Set off on what’s been likened to a stroll through the woods along the Meander Loop Trail at Mianus River Park in Stamford. The easy trail tallies 2.6 miles and promises such natural beauty as lush trees, gentle streams, and mushrooms popping out of the ground. While the trail can get busy at times, you’ll still be serenaded by the sounds of nature, including the songbirds in the trees. You might even pass by weasels and river otters. Wear sturdy shoes to prevent turning your ankle as you will deal with some rocky terrain.
