Massachusetts may be known for its impeccable coastline and sandy beaches, but there’s something to be said for skipping the crowds and heading to the local lake instead. This lovely spot in Shutesbury is beautifully clear and perfect for a day outside.
Lake Wyola is a gorgeous swimming hole in Shutesbury. It's a pretty place for a paddle or just some relaxing sunbathing.
The lake was actually much smaller before the construction of a dam in 1883. The new dam doubled the size of the lake, and left us with the charming waterfront we can enjoy today.
The lake is part of Lake Wyola State Park. It’s a quiet place far from the bustling beaches and crowded shores of more popular lakes, but it still draws plenty of locals and visitors on sunny days.
Guests can swim or fish, as well as explore the lake’s far shores using canoes and kayaks. Motorized boating isn’t allowed, so you can be sure of a tranquil experience.
The color of the water shifts with the weather and seasonal conditions, but you can expect to find Wyola a pretty shade of blue on most clear days.
If you remember to pack a picnic lunch, you can grill up something hot and fresh on the lake’s charcoal grills. There are also restrooms, athletic fields, and a volleyball court available at the park.
Visiting the park is free, but there is a parking fee from Memorial Day to Labor Day. MA plates must pay $8 per car, while non-MA plates will be charged $15 per car. Stop by soon to check out this gorgeous spot!
