Life has become so complicated these days. Every so often, I long for those carefree days of childhood when we played outside until the street lights came on, chased down the ice cream truck, and drank water from a hose (or a squirt gun). When that nostalgic yearning starts to creep up, I try to go for a walk somewhere quiet, away from the noise and stress. This iconic trail in Massachusetts promises an abundance of natural beauty and the chance to enjoy nature’s quiet.
Thoreau escaped to Walden Pond to enjoy the simplicity of life, something we can still embrace in the 21st century with a visit to Walden Pond State Reservation in Concord. The park is an idyllic destination for a day of swimming in the summer, boating, and picnicking. But the best way to explore is on the picturesque Walden Pond Loop Trail, especially if it’s your first visit.
While Walden Pond State Reservation has a sizeable parking lot that’s open year-round, it closes when filled. Parking on the street is prohibited, and all cars must pay an entrance fee with those with Massachusetts plates paying significantly less than visitors from out-of-state. Bring a credit or debit card with you as cash is not accepted.
The 1.9-mile Walden Pond Loop Trail earns an easy rating, making it perfect if you’ve got little ones. However, dogs are not allowed at Walden Pond State Reservation. The scenic trail can get pretty busy with hikers and walkers, especially when the weather cooperates. (Bikes are not permitted.)
Walden Pond Loop is predominately flat, but comfy shoes are a good idea. Several spots with stone stairs will take you down to the pond, where you might see a few ducks floating. The tree-lined path promises beautiful views of the water, allowing plenty of time for quiet reflection. Heed the signs telling you to stay on the path to avoid disturbing the wildlife and flora.
This is one of those iconic trails in Massachusetts that’s worth visiting any time of the year. Try to hike the Walden Pond Loop Trail when the landscape is brimming with shades of green in the spring and summer, during the peak of the fall foliage, and when sprinkled with freshly fallen snow.
