My family and I recently visited the Mount Wachusett Ski Area in Princeton, Massachusetts for the first time. I hadn't been out to this part of the state in quite a while and was blown away by its beauty. The mountains were majestic and the scenery was stunning. I couldn’t wait to see what more the area had to offer. I quickly added Mount Wachusett to my future hiking list!
Wachusett Mountain State Reservation is made up of 3,000 acres of scenic land and includes many miles of trails.
According to AllTrails, the Wachusett Mountain via Balance Rock, Old Indian, and Semuhenna Trail Loop is rated one of the top hikes in the state.
This trail is a 3.8-mile loop that takes over two hours to complete. It is ranked as a moderately difficult trail. Certain aspects of it can be steep and rocky. It can also get muddy at times.
Because this loop is made up of several intersecting trails, there is a lot to see. Water features, towers, and historical markers are some of the features that you may pass along the way. Birds and snakes may also make appearances.
You may also pass through part of the ski area.
Please note that some hiking trails will not be open during ski season.
One of the coolest parts of this hike is viewing Balance Rock. This double rock formation with one boulder balancing atop another was created by glaciers.
The summit of the mountain is 2,006 feet up. Be sure to take a photo next to this marker when you reach the top!
There is also an observation tower, some benches, and interesting signage to read in addition to the beautiful scenic views.
If you happen to be hiking during the fall festival season, you can also enjoy hopping aboard the scenic Skyride.
It is a great way to view this beautiful mountain from a totally different perspective.
To find out more about hiking the mountain, please visit the Wachusett Mountain State Reservation website. After the hike, head to the 1761 Old Mill Restaurant for a good meal with a side of history. Be sure to check out our Ultimate Hiking Packing List before setting out on the trails.
