Covering an area of approximately 12,000 acres, Mount Greylock State Reservation is home to the highest point in the state. Mount Greylock rises 3,491 feet above sea level, the highest elevation in Massachusetts.
While there are numerous trails throughout Mount Greylock State Reservation, you can take a portion of the Appalachian Trail to the mountain's summit.
While the trek along the Appalachian Trail is considered difficult, it will get you above the clouds and to views that will make the physical effort worthwhile.
On a cloudy day, it certainly does seem like you are above the clouds in Massachusetts. And that feeling is spectacular!
At the summit of Mount Greylock, you will also find the Veterans War Memorial Tower.
When there are no clouds and it's clear, you can see about 90 miles in the distance. The views from the summit of Mount Greylock are quite impressive!
If you are unable to hike along the Appalachian Trail to the summit of Mount Greylock, you can always drive to the top. The auto road is open between late May and late October and will easily get you above the clouds in Massachusetts.
