Tucked away in Mendon is a wild attraction that often flies under the radar. Its distance from Boston and the coast makes this place a bit of a reach for tourists, but it should be on every local’s itinerary. Southwick’s Zoo is more than a bunch of animals – it’s an adventure.
Spread over 300 acres of land, this zoo has designed its exhibits to resemble the natural habitats of its animals as closely as possible. Over 850 exotic animals from across the globe are housed in the interactive enclosures. This place will let you get so close to the animals that you’ll feel like one of the pack.
The highlight of this place is how up close and personal you can get with the animals.
The enclosures are meant to mimic the natural homes of the animals, so everyone is as happy and comfortable as possible.
The array of animals you’ll find here is really amazing. Roam amongst kangaroos, chameleons and tigers. Listen to the calls of exotic birds, or hang out with armadillos all day.
Stroll through the 35-acre deer forest, where beautiful deer will stride right alongside you for a nuzzle or a handful of corn.
Soar above the wildlife on the zoo’s Skyfari ride, an aerial journey above the African Plains animal enclosures.

Or maybe a slow cruise on an elephant is more your style.
Though you can't pet these guys, the zoo is also home to a Bengal tiger and African lion. This is also the only place in New England with both a hyena and a rhinoceros.
Kids will love the zoo's beautiful population of monkeys and apes. The capuchin monkeys are particularly adorable.
The giant tortoises are a fan favorite.
Get friendly with chickens, goats and alpacas at the awesome petting zoo.

Southwick’s Zoo is located at 2 Southwick Street in Mendon. It is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. everyday, including holidays. This is a rain or shine attraction, so don’t let a little rotten weather keep you from communing with nature.
Adult tickets are $25, while children’s tickets are $18. Adult and child combo passes are only $33. There are senior, military discounts and family value passes available.
