While many of us think of Massachusetts as having a landscape mostly filled with mountains, hills, and beaches, there are some surprising natural wonders that can be found within the state. One such wonder, Chesterfield Gorge, is often referred to as the "Grand Canyon of Massachusetts" and is one place you have to visit. Chesterfield Gorge Trail might just be the most beautiful hike in the entire state.
Located in the Chesterfield Gorge Reservation near the Gilbert A. Bliss State Forest, Chesterfield Gorge is a geological wonder right here in the Bay State.
Originally carved out by glacial meltwater, the East Branch of the Westfield River continues to shape the ever-changing rock canyon.
Some portions of the gorge's walls are taller than 30 feet making it quite an impressive sight. You'll be able to see why this has been referred to as the "Grand Canyon of Massachusetts."
Access to the canyon involves a hike along the Chesterfield Gorge Trail, an easy four-mile out-and-back trail with an overall elevation gain of 285 feet. This trail is good for all skill levels.
Along the way, you can enjoy a stroll through the forest with ash and oak trees. And look out for a variety of wildlife that call the Chesterfield Gorge Reservation area home.
There is a half-mile of trail along the clifftop where you'll be treated to incredible views of the gorge and its surroundings. Due to close proximity to the edge of the steep cliffs, there is a railing in place for safety.
While you cannot access the bottom of the gorge by trail, the views you'll get are some of the most impressive you'll find in the state.
