Ocean City is cool, but did you know that there is SO MUCH MORE to Maryland's Eastern Shore? Sadly, many people religiously head straight to OC each summer, leaving the rest of the Eastern Shore untouched. Locals know the value of other amazing places throughout the eastern portion of the state. From small canal towns to historic spots, the Eastern Shore is thriving with places to see and things to do.
1. Chesapeake City
Located on the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal, this waterfront town is truly unique. Check out the boutiques, delicious restaurants, and enjoy a ferry ride on the picturesque canal.
2. Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Byway
This tour highlights several points of interest, including places where Harriet Tubman lived as an enslaved child. You'll learn fascinating stories and intriguing tales of bravery and survival.
3. Crisfield
This tiny fishing town has the freshest seafood you will ever eat. Spend a day watching hard working fisherman or head to the nearby Janes Island State Park for sightseeing and canoeing.
4. Frontier Town Campground
This quirky campground is located five minutes from Ocean City and offers campsites, a pool, waterpark, and arcade. If you're feeling adventurous, try the high ropes course and zip-line!
5. Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge
This wildlife refuge is a dreamy place filled with migratory birds so be sure to bring your binoculars. You can also bike the several trails around the refuge or kayak among the magnificent marshes.
6. Assateague Island Trails
Known for its beach thriving with wild ponies, Assateague also has three small hiking trails. They're all a little different. One is marshy, another forested, and one with dunes.
7. Casino at Ocean Downs
Located in Berlin, Ocean Downs is a great place to check out the racetrack on a nice day. Feeling lucky? Check out the numerous slot machines at their casino.
8. Smith Island
Take the ferry to Smith Island to experience the heritage of this special Maryland gem. At Smith Island, life is simple and you'll feel relaxed taking in the scenery of the wetlands and observing everyday life.
9. Salisbury Zoo
This zoo is free of admission but they do accept donations. Conservation is a key element of this place and their programs focus on teaching about wildlife and the environment.
10. Tilghman Island
This waterman's village is the perfect place to travel for delicious seafood, fishing, and gorgeous views of the Chesaeake Bay. Life moves slower here, which may be just what you need.
