Nothing stokes summertime nostalgia quite like a trip to a swimming hole. If you are feeling that aching longing to escape the sweltering heat of your typical July in Maryland by basking in the cool current of a river, and perhaps if you’re enchanted with the idea of bringing along a picnic lunch to enjoy while you dry off in the sun along the riverbank, then Rocks State Park has exactly what you’re looking for. The Hills Grove Picnic Area in the park is a wonderful spot to spend an idyllic summer afternoon with friends and family alike. Relive old memories while creating new ones by taking the trip up. We promise you it’s worth it.
The picnic area is a sandy, shady escape beneath some beautiful trees with plenty of room for the whole family to spread out. There’s even a small playground and jungle gym nearby.
Deer Creek can get pretty deep at places, so it’s perfect for that suffocating midsummer weather we get in Maryland.
You can drift down the river if you want to, but there are plenty of calm spots to lounge as well.
There are a number of different places you can get down into the river, but this isn’t even the only place to swim in the park. During the summer the river can get a bit crowded, but don’t worry…
…Because this spot by the waterfall a bit further into the park is there for you as well!
The hiking trails in Rocks State Park run from down by the riverbanks up into the mountains. You can get up 190 feet above your swimming hole by hiking to the King and Queen Seat! Nothing beats a birds-eye view of a river you’ve just been soaking in.
If you’re feeling that longing for a classic summertime adventure to add to your memories, be sure to check out the Rocks State Park website for more information. And if you’re in search of other places to scratch the itch, check out this list of 10 of Maryland’s best swimming holes.
