Sideling Hill can be seen from miles away, appearing as though there's a chunk missing out of the mountain.
This is sort of true, but not quite. So travelers would no longer have to drive around the sprawling mountain, this man-made pass was created.
Although the rock cut was created by man, the layers of mountain left behind are a marvel that only Mother Earth can provide.
The folds of syncline strata are wondrous to see in person. This outdoor classroom of sorts is a must-see for lovers of geology and natural beauty.
Even more interesting is that water trickles through the rock layers year-round. Winter temperatures cause this to freeze, and the results are surreal.
If you have time on your journey, stop by the Welcome Center, and climb the stairs for an epic overlook view. (Don't forget your camera.)
