Anyone living in Maryland might never have seen the actual Niagara Falls in person. But, we have a comparable natural wonder in the Old Line State worth checking out. Muddy Creek Falls is in Swallow Falls State Park, and it’s officially the highest free-falling waterfall in Maryland. Sure, it might not be record-breaking in comparison to Niagara at 180 feet high, but this one is still a worthwhile experience for nature and adventure enthusiasts.
Nestled inside Swallow Falls State Park, you’ll find not one but TWO impressive waterfalls worth checking out.
The bigger of the two is Muddy Creek Falls, a 53-foot cascade that has been dubbed the highest free-falling waterfall in Maryland.
This waterfall is really a sight to see in person, especially when it’s surrounded by old hemlock trees, which some have said to be over 300 years old.
The trails to get to Muddy Creek Falls are relatively easy to walk, with proper markings throughout. Just be careful when you get close to the lower portion of the falls. Things can be dangerous and slippery.
The falls are a result of the Youghiogheny River (known as the “Yawk") falling into a beautiful gorge.
If you really want to see this waterfall at its best, be sure to visit it right after a heavy rainfall or storm.
There is a short, one-mile trail known as the Swallow Falls Canyon Trail that will take hikers directly along Muddy Creek Falls.
Make sure to keep your eyes peeled for these ancient Hemlock trees as you hike!
There is often a fee to enter the park, so be prepared to pay a few bucks before you visit.
