Summers in DC are often hot, humid and sticky. In order to stay cool and let’s face it, sane, Washingtonians are always on the hunt for fun in the sun experiences that will cool us off. Luckily we have plenty of nearby beaches and swimming holes that are sure to cool us down. We also have one of the best rivers in the world! The Shenandoah River just might be the best lazy river near DC.
There are several spots to tube the Shenandoah. But the one closest to DC is at Harpers Ferry, right along the border of Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia.
It’s about an hour and a half’s drive from the district and once you get there, there are a few tubing companies that you can choose from.
Two popular spots are River Riders and Harpers Ferry Adventure Center. Both have different options depending on how adventurous you are.
There is flat water tubing, white water tubing and even white water rafting available at both these companies.
If you’re looking for the lazy river experience, you’ll want to flat water tube down the river.
You can rent your tube ranging from $20-$50 depending on how long you want to be on the river. There is also group pricing available. You can also rent cooler tubes so you can bring your beverages and snacks along with you for the ride.
A shuttle will drop you and your tube off and you hop into the water, sit back, relax and enjoy the float! If you’re with a group, you can tie your tubes together to float down the river together.
Floats usually last about an hour and a half to two hours, depending on the water level and if you stop to just float around for a while.
So when the temperature is pushing 100 degrees and it feels like 120, just jump in the car and head up for the most magical day on the coolest lazy river near DC!
