Maryland is full of amazing hiking trails and state parks. The following one offers hiking, history, and best of all, fascinating ruins. Head here to explore old buildings and memorials and bring your camera -- this place is like a fairytale!
Gathland State Park is located in Frederick County, Maryland.
The grounds here were once part of an estate belonging to George Alfred Townsend. He was a journalist during the Civil War, and later, a novelist.
While living here in the 1800s, Townsend built several buildings and structures on the property. They still remain today, with some holding up remarkably well...
...and others, in ruins.
The most famous structure is known as the National War Correspondents Memorial. It was constructed in 1896 and was dedicated to journalists who died in war.
The intricate details are amazing in person.
Explore the rest of the area, where you'll find hidden archways...
...and even a mausoleum, which was never used.
Don't forget to stop by the informational signs and brush up on your history.
Then, take to the local trail! You'll find part of the Appalachian Trail here...
...which offers some pretty phenomenal views!
