Stargazers, mark your calendars -- you’ll want to keep your eyes on the sky this March! There’s a celestial phenomenon happening soon in the Maryland night sky, and it’s been dubbed a “planet parade.” Read on for the details, head someplace dark in Maryland, and look up — viewing this planetary alignment belongs on your bucket list this year.
If you have a favorite place to view the stars in Maryland, you'll want to head there this month. With very little light pollution, Assateague Island is a local favorite for stargazing...
...or consider heading someplace rural, or perhaps someplace by the bay. There are also dark sky parks that are great for stargazing in Maryland. One of which is Green Ridge State Forest in Allegany County.
Find a cozy spot and look up. The planets Jupiter, Mercury, Venus, Uranus, and Mars will line up in order along with the moon on the nights of March 25 through March 30.
Some planets might be visible throughout the month, but you'll get an especially good chance at viewing them on those nights.
Venus will be the easiest to spot because it's one of the brightest planets in the sky. Under the perfect conditions, you should be able to witness the full alignment, but grab the binoculars as Uranus might not be as visible as the other planets.
These cosmic configurations are quite rare, some not happening for decades at a time, so this is an incredible sight that you certainly don't want to miss. Be sure to mark your calendar and plan accordingly.
