Keeping the whole family happy, especially when we're looking for something fun to do, can certainly pose a challenge. Falling Branch Trail, a waterfall trail in Maryland, just might be the perfect answer to that age-old question, "what do you want to do?" A family-friendly trail the whole family will love, the popular trail also offers a pretty cool surprise. (Hint: bring your swimsuits.)
Tucked in Rocks State Park in Jarrettsville, Falling Branch Trail leads straight to Kilgore Falls, which cascades down 17 feet.
The 1.3-mile trail can get pretty busy, especially on a pretty day, so just be prepared for the crowds. Your best bet is to visit early in the day, so you can snag a spot in the small parking lot.
If you arrive earlier in the day, you might also have the trail (and the waterfall) all to yourself.
Follow the trail that features a wooden boardwalk and a short wooden footbridge. Much of the path is shaded by towering trees to protect you from the full force of the sun.
Chances are you'll hear the sound of Kilgore Falls before it comes into sight. You'll probably also hear the sounds of...
Laughter and water splashing. The pool into which the waterfall drops is a fun wading spot for the whole family, so remember to wear your swimsuits and bring towels.
Even on hot days, the water can be pretty chilly, so just be prepared.
Before you head over to Rocks State Park, you'll have to make a reservation if you're visiting on a weekend or on a holiday. Make a reservation.
