The best way to experience Maryland's natural beauty is by getting out on its hiking trails. Of course, not everyone is an experienced hiker. If you're new to hiking, you'll want to start with an easy, accessible trail, and we've got the perfect one for you. Visit Centennial Park in Ellicott City, and get ready to enjoy some beautiful views while getting a bit of exercise.
Centennial Park is a beautiful, 337-acre park in Elliott City that's the perfect place for your first hiking adventure.
Address: 10000 Clarksville Pike, Ellicott City, MD 21042
There's a pretty, paved path that circles Centennial Lake, and it's suitable for explorers of every skill level.
It's about 2.5 miles around the loop, and the terrain is nice and flat with just a 95-foot elevation gain.
Really, this path is more of a stroll than an actual hike, but it's a great way to stretch your legs and get accustomed to outdoor exercise.
Be prepared to share this trail with others - Centennial Park is a popular spot for runners, cyclists, and families. Stay to the right and be ready for others to pass by you on the left.
You don't need any special hiking gear for this one - just a pair of comfortable shoes. Bring some sunscreen and a water bottle, too.
The lake views are fantastic!
Keep an eye out for wildlife during your walk. The wetlands around the lake provide sanctuary to all kinds of birds and animals.
Centennial Park is open from 7 a.m. to dusk. For fewer crowds, take your hike on a weekday morning.
Have you hiked round Centennial Lake? We'd love to hear about your experience there! For more information, visit the Howard County website, and follow the park's Facebook page to see what's going on there right now.
