Calling all adventurers! Did you know that you can easily explore an abandoned church and cemetery in Maryland? This hidden spot is full of scenery, history, and a bit of an eerie vibe. If you're fascinated by abandoned places, this hike deserves a spot on your bucket list. Lace up your hiking boots, and let's go!
Today's adventure starts at Alberton Rocks Trailhead in Windsor Mill, Maryland.
Find a spot in the small parking lot, which is located right next to the trailhead. Ready to start your journey?
The trail leads to the abandoned town of Daniels, which was populated by a community of about 90 families until the late 1960s. After the local textile mill closed and people lost their jobs, they were forced to move and much of the town was demolished.
A handful of remnants can still be found in the area. You could follow the main trail, which will lead you to an abandoned church known as Pentecostal Holiness Church...
...or for even better, untouched church ruins, find this hidden path.
Along the hidden path you'll spot decades-old vehicles being overtaken by nature. Keep your eyes peeled!
Soon, you'll see this structure to your right, which is known as Saint Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Church.
Hike right up to the church ruins, which are unexpectedly beautiful among the surrounding scenery.
You may even spot stone skulls that visitors have left behind, adding an eerie vibe to the scene.
Don't forget to explore behind the church ruins. There's another hidden trail that leads to an old cemetery.
Dozens of tombstones can be found in this wooded area. Many date back to the early 1900s.
The trail is only a couple of miles in length, depending on much you're willing to explore. You can visit year-round, but the ruins are easier to see during winter, when less foliage is blocking the historic spots.
