Wondering "What are the best waterfalls near me in Maine?" Well, wonder no more! There are tons of natural wonders in Maine, and that includes stunning waterfalls. We've scoured the state and compiled a list of 10 of the most breathtaking waterfalls in the state. So, the next time you find yourself searching for "waterfalls near me in Maine," simply refer to this list, and you won't be disappointed.
1. Angel Falls, Franklin County
This 90-foot plunging waterfall comes from the Mountain Brook and takes about 30 minutes to reach on the (almost) mile-long trail. Leave the trunks at home, as swimming is not allowed.
2. Gulf Hagas, Piscataquis County
You can take in the "Grand Canyon of the East" via an 8.6-mile looped hike. You might remember this one from our article on natural wonders in Maine. We just can't get enough of this place! In the summer, bring your bathing suit because swimming is allowed here.
3. Coos Canyon, Oxford County
Visible from Route 17 scenic highway, Coos Canyon is a great place to spend the day. In the summer, you can wade in the waters, jump in, or stay dry with a picnic in the connected park. Don't avoid it in the winter, though - you can easily pull over to take a look.
4. Snow Falls, Oxford County
There are four sets of cascades at Snow Falls, which flows from the Little Androscoggin River. Easily accessible, this is another good set of falls to see if you'd prefer to pull the car over versus a mega-hike in the cold. It's also a good visit for the winter since swimming is not allowed here.
5. Screw Auger Falls, Oxford County
These Bear River-sourced falls are comprised of two impressive drops. The first is a 30-foot drop over a granite ledge into a gorge. The second is just below the first and features another 30-foot drop. These are heavily visited in the summer, but are beautiful any time of year. No swimming, so don't worry about bringing a towel.
6. The Cataracts, Oxford County
Admittedly best in early spring when the snow melt makes these falls roar, you'll still have a good time scrambling around the rocks any time of year. Together, the individual falls total about 100 feet, and you'll enjoy swimming and sliding around when it's warm enough.
7. Grand Falls, Somerset County
A bit off the beaten path, these falls are truly a hidden gem. You won't be able to swim, but it doesn't matter when the view outside the water is this glorious.
8. Smalls Falls, Franklin County
Sourced by the Sandy River, Smalls Falls includes four individual cascades and lots of places to swim. Have a visit the next time you're in Rangeley - it's nearby.
9. Bickford Slides, Oxford County
The Bickford Brook travels between Blueberry and Sugarloaf Mountains within the White Mountains. There are hundreds of feet of various cascades, and when it's warm, swimming is a great activity along the way.
10. Moxie Falls, Somerset County
Oh, Moxie. We could never leave you off this list! These falls are the highest in Maine and, arguably, the most well-known. Visit these as part of an easy 30-minute hike (longer and more difficult if you want to see the base) and feel free to swim if it's warm enough.
