We all know that Maine has the most pristine coastline in New England. Just ask anyone who's read our other articles about the coast! In all seriousness, we DO have a pretty incredible coastline and you might be surprised to learn that it's actually longer than that of California. What other secrets do we harbor? Plenty! And the beach we're sharing with you today is one of the best. Tucked in an out of the way place in Wells, you'll need to take a walk through a lush forest in order to find Laudholm Beach!
Laudholm Beach is one of the most beautiful in Maine and you'll often find yourself in complete solitude while there.
To visit this secret beach, head to Well Reserve at Laudholm and the Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve.
The most popular route in the reserve is the Knight Trail to Barrier Beach Trail leading to Laudholm Beach.
You'll start on the Knight Trail walking through an area that provides a view over grasslands with Mount Agamenticus in the distance.
Soon you'll cross through the abandoned apple orchard and an aspen grove.
Throughout the reserve you'll find shaded areas and marsh land perfect for some peace and quiet.
Ultimately, you'll end up crossing a dike before reaching the Drakes Island gate heading to Laudholm Beach.
But, the journey doesn't end once you've reached the beach.
Here you'll find plenty more to explore - from swaths of seashells to small tidal pools begging to be investigated.
The beach is truly beautiful and during low tide it seems to stretch on and on.
One of our favorite things about Wells Reserve is that it's open year round, allowing for different ways to take in the Maine landscape and coast.
Wells Reserve also offers guided tours - from walking to kayaking - as well as talks about the history of Laudholm and the land.
A number of different tours and walks are coming up throughout the summer, so be sure to check out their website to plan your trip!
Wells Reserve at Laudholm is located at 342 Laudholm Farm Road in Wells. You can call them on 207-646-1555. Check them out on Facebook or on their website for more information on upcoming events, talks and tours. So let us know if you have been to Laudholm Beach, its tucked away but completely worth the trip.
