When you think about hiking you might consider images of wooded forests or even streams and rivers. Some of us picture towering peaks with triumphant arms overhead indicating that we've just completed a huge feat. This, while wonderful, is not always hiking. In some cases here in Maine a hike can be considered a leisurely stroll through some beautiful surroundings. And those surrounding need not be surrounded by green. This trail, located in one of the state's larger towns, is just a much a hike as anything else. And it might even be the most beautiful!
Rockland is one of the most picturesque towns in the state. It helps that it's right on the coast and that it's absolutely thrumming with culture and beauty.
And one of our favorite things to do is to explore the 5-mile Rockland Harbor Trail. If 5 miles isn't in the cards you can also choose to just do a portion of the route.
The route, which follows the line of the harbor offers an opportunity to see the commercial downtown area as well as the working waterfront.
And along the way, visitors can get a glimpse of what the arts and culture scene feels like.
While this is certainly a great way to see the water, the path does veer into the city with a paved path.
This makes the route simple and leisurely without any elevation.
If you're here for the day you'll notice that locals come here to walk their dog, get some thinking in, or just enjoy a coffee in the morning. This community asset reminds people exactly what's so great about being in Maine.
If you visit in the spring and summer the route includes lots of plants and flowers.
And, of course, those incredible views are offered all year.
As the path meets the harbor the trail becomes a boardwalk. And you'll find plenty of places to sit and relax.
Although with views like these the walk itself is relaxing as can be.
Time your visit for first thing in the morning to enjoy coastal early light, or wind down the day with a sunset visit.
Either way, you'll want to return!
The Rockland Harbor Trail is lovely and can be experienced year-round. You can learn more about it on Maine Trail Finder by clicking here. What other more urban trails have you come to love? Let us know so we can explore them too!
And, while you're in Rockland, you might want to take a quick trip to another nearby beauty. Camden is a small Maine town that looks like a Hallmark movie during the fall.
