There's a whole lot to love about Maine. From the quirky attractions to the plentiful opportunities to appreciate the outdoors, when the weather is cooperating nothing is impossible! While there's a whole host of beautiful places in Maine from which to choose, we're going to help you narrow it down and give you a great option for this weekend's explorations. Head to the woods to see this bizarre rock formation. It's fairly easy to access and, the best part is, it's totally free.
You’ll find Piazza Rock near Saddleback Mountain, on the Appalachian Trail where things are fairly easy and accessible. As long as you like short walks with a few uphill sections, you’ll enjoy this. Even those who prefer easier hikes will appreciate this as there are plenty of smoother, flatter areas along the route as well.
While the area is rocky, you can’t miss the distinctive Piazza Rock - it’s one of the most impressive formations in the state. The rock is flat - and it’s seemingly hanging in midair above the ground.
It looks like magic, but there’s some real science behind its precarious positioning. Saddleback Mountain is actually a conglomeration of large rock blocks joined together.
To truly appreciate it, you’ll need to see it for yourself. To do that, go to Sandy River Plantation via Route 4. This is where the AT crosses a busy road, so be careful.
You can park just off the highway, on the west side. Then carefully walk across Route 4 and head north on the A.T.
The route is just under 2 miles and the first portion has an elevation gain of about 450 feet.
Once you’ve completed this first part, the trail is flat. This is a great way to first experience the Appalachian Trail without a huge commitment.
Once you reach the rock, you’ll want to climb on top and see things from above!
The route here is out and back, which means you’ll need to turn around and leave the same way you came. Always be careful hiking and if you’re alone make sure someone knows where you plan to go. Safety first!
If you crave even more natural wonders in Maine you'll want to take this road trip. It hits most of our favorite attractions and might just instill a whole new love of Vacationland.
