Everything might be bigger in Texas, but when it comes to winter, Maine's got it on lock. Our snowfall is epic, our outdoor winter activities are more fun than anywhere else and our residents are great at making the best of the cold weather. Nothing proves this more than the year Maine took home the prize for the largest snowman ever built!
Maine claimed rights to the world's tallest snowman in 2008, in the town of Bethel.
The huge snowman – which was actually a snow-woman – was lovingly named “Olympia Snowe” after Maine's senior senator at the time.
She had wreaths for eyes, eyelashes made of 16 skis, pine trees as arms and big tires as buttons and lips.
Her hat was a 48 foot in circumference, pink fleece affair and she wore a 6.5-foot scarf to keep her warm. She donned a lovely snowflake necklace bigger than six feet across.
Olympia Snowe stood at a whopping 122 feet and 1 inch tall – effectively breaking the old world record, which was ALSO set in Maine back in 1999!
Still not impressed? Think about this…
Olympia was only around 30 feet shorter than the Statue of Liberty!
Her pine tree arms were 27 feet tall.
Her "carrot" nose was 8 feet long and had to be brought in on a truck!
It took 13,000,000 pounds of snow to bring her to life.
To our knowledge, nobody has ever exceeded the size of Olympia.
But, we’re sure lots of kids in Maine have attempted. If you’ve got a photo of a snowman you’ve created, share it with us on Facebook!
