You can spend a lifetime exploring Maine's hiking trails, but not every trail is suitable for every hiker. Here's a trail that offers some of the most incredible views - but most people will never see them because the hike is so difficult.
You'll find the Precipice Trail in Acadia National Park, and it offers one of the best views in the state. While it starts out simple enough, with some stairs carved into the side of the mountain, it gets tricky pretty quickly.
The trail is just 1.4 miles out and back, but you'll need to be agile enough to navigate obstacles like boulder fields.
In some places, you'll climb metal rung ladders...
...in other spots, you'll inch your way along a precipice, holding onto a metal railing that's bolted right into the side of the cliff.
The views along the top portion of the trail are unbeatable, but only if you aren't afraid of hikes. Don't look down if you experience vertigo!
This trail is quite short, but is considered hard because of the physical challenges it presents. It's closed between March and August because this spot is a nesting place for peregrine falcons. That's right - you're basically climbing around high up on the cliffs where peregrines live!
When you get to the top of the trail, you'll be rewarded with this incredible view. Because of the difficulty of this hike, most people will never see this view in person.
Have you ever hiked Precipice Trail? We'd love to hear about your adventure in the comments!
If you're looking for an easy hike, here's one that's just two miles long, and it's perfect for the kids.
