There's magic in the nature of Maine, but you don't need to venture off-the-beaten-path to find it. While we love the trails that wind throughout the state, you can find beauty and wonder in easier ways. There are a number of beautiful gardens and natural areas in every corner as long as you know where to look. Today we're focusing on one of the most beautiful and unexpected gardens in the state!
You’ll want to head to Northeast Harbor to check out one of the most incredibly curated gardens in the state, The Asticou Azalea Garden. Created in 1956 by Northeast Harbor resident, Charles K. Savage, a visit will soothe your soul.
The garden is modeled after a traditional Japanese stroll garden which means you’ll find lots of paths leading through all areas of the gardens. Everything here is intentional, which isn’t a surprise when you consider that Savage was a diligent student of Japanese garden design.
One of the most striking features of the area is the zen garden that Savage included. It has rocks, sand, and is carefully raked to create the imagery of islands and moving water.
The design focus of the garden is a perfect balance between natural and man-made elements.
There are lots of areas to take some time to sit and enjoy the quiet and the views.
And while things here have been carefully considered, planned, and executed nature always has its own way and you’ll see that throughout. There are flowers and plants surrounding you at all times, making their own decisions about where to be.
And there are plenty of birds, flowers, butterflies, and other native Maine wildlife.
The garden is a wonderful day trip if you’re in the area and want something that’s a bit calmer than exploring Acadia National Park. This is also a wonderful place to come when you’re in need of some alone time.
With lush green trees, bright fall foliage, and an unbeatable breeze, Asticou Azalea Garden is a pleasure whenever it’s open.
The Asticou Azalea Garden is open in 2020 from September 5th through October 31st on Saturdays and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visiting logistics are a bit different now so be sure to check the website for more information on how to explore. If you have questions the garden can be reached on 207-276-3699.
If you love the idea of Asticou, you'll love the others hidden in the state. Here's a secret garden near Camden you're guaranteed to love!
