Despite the fact that we're experiencing some warmer temps this week, there's no denying that fall is on the way. The mornings and evenings are chillier and leaves are even beginning to turn in some areas. But, more important than anything else, apples are on the trees ready to be picked! You might want to wait until sweater weather to visit orchards, but if you do that you'll miss the best crops. So, get there now. And, at this special place, you'll even get a nice does of Maine history.
Brackett Orchards is said to be the oldest family owned and operated orchard in the state of Maine.
The family's descendants originally settled in the town of Limington in 1783. Not long after that, the land was cleared and the first apple trees were planted.
Around for more than 200 years, it's operated by Manley Brackett, an eighth generation member of the family who is still growing apples, pumpkins and squash.
A visit to Brackett's Orchard means more than just grabbing a few apples and heading home.
Beginning in early September, the pick-your-own crop is open and you'll find kids and adults having fun in the orchard.
You can gather all you can manage for $12 per peck and $20 per half bushel.
And, the farm store stays open almost all year.
Though apple season is clearly the best time to go!
The store stocks fresh apples, cider, jam and produce.
And, as Halloween gets closer, don't forget the pumpkins!
But, like we said, Brackett's is more than just apples - they offer great entertainment on the weekends.
From outdoor local bands to the Apple Express apple train!
Come hungry because there's fresh oven pizza to be had.
Almost makes you forget about fruit, huh?
This incredibly, family run orchard operates their Pick Your Own service seven days a week from 10am to 5pm.
During the week head to the orchard located on Route 11. But we recommend you wait for the weekend when you can pick all you want at their hilltop location!
Brackett's Orchard is located at 224 Sokokis Avenue in Limington. Give them a call on (207) 730-9169. Check them out online by clicking here.
