Hiking in Maine can take many forms. From woodland forest treks to sky-high mountain peaks to our personal favorite - coastal trails with magnificent views of the water. This one, in Harpswell, is actually considered a geologic wonder. The crashing waves along the shore are the result of rock formations that you won't find many other places in the state. It's not hidden and fairly easy to find, but it's certainly one of the most interesting natural wonders in Maine.
You'll find the beautiful Giant's Stairs Trail by crossing the Cribstone Bridge to Bailey Island.
The simple route is less than a half-mile and starts at the end of Ocean Street.
The trail has gorgeous views of the eastern part of Casco Bay and on a clear day you can see all the way to the larger Atlantic Ocean.
The trail gets it name from the erosion that's taken place in the rocks along the shore, making the coast look like stairs fit for a giant.
The coast is quintessentially Maine, with lots of rocks and crags.
As a result, the huge waves create a monstrous crash against the shore.
Despite the rough seas below, the trail itself is smooth and manageable.
The blue and green that is so typical of Maine is on full display here!
To get to the trail head you'll pass Mackerel Cove on the right before turning left onto Washington Ave.
As long as services are not in session, you can park at the Episcopal Church. There's also parking available along the street as long as cars can still pass.
From here, walk to the end of Ocean Street heading east.
You can also find the route by heading south along Washington Ave to other other end of the trail. Signs will be posted.
The trail is a loop through the McIntosh Lot Preserve. It allows visitors to use the path as well as streets to get to the Stairs and back without having to walk on private property. The trail is open from sunrise to sunset. You can learn more by visiting the Harpswell Heritage Land Trust website.
Another fun outdoor trip is the short hike to these impressive falls. The best part? There are enough swimming holes here to keep you busy all day.
